Nathan D. Merced was delivered by C-Section on August 4, 2006. Though born a healthy, 8lb 12oz, crying baby, he experienced blood pressure shortly issues after birth which overexerted his lungs. Normally, after birth, a baby's blood pressure naturally (and normally) drops, but Nathan's did not. He was transferred by plane to the Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock on the 5th. Today, the 9th, I accompanied Matthew and Judy to see how Nathan was doing with our own eyes and to speak with the doctors face to face.

We were first greeted by Nathan's team of nurses and assistants, who patiently explained the machinery he was on and offered an overview of his current condition. We were then greeted by the hospital chaplain, who said he makes multiple daily rounds to pray for him.

Since Saturday, Nathan has been on an ECMO machine, which has alleviated the stress on his lungs by performing 80% of the work for him. His blood is removed by a tube through the neck, scrubbed, oxygenated, and returned to his body.

Today was a good day -- they took him off the blood pressure medicine, but to do so, they needed to bump up the ECMO's work. His physician is optimistic. His doctor says that it's pretty much up to Nathan -- if he allows it, the doctors will begin to wean him off of the ECMO machine as early as Saturday. No word yet on when he will be well enough to go home.

He is absolutely beautiful...
