Perfume Flask Info Sign

Perfume flasks, or aryballoi or alabastra, were essential items in the male and female toilet in ancient Greece. They were tied with ribbon around their narrow necks, so that they could be easily carried and suspended, and were accompanied by a sponge for smearing the body with oil.

In Byzantine times, glass vials in a variety of forms and colours were used as luxurious unguentaria for perfumes and oil. Similar vials containing oil were also in use for medicinal purposes.
