This was a stunning trek across one of the largest gorges in Europe. The gorge is in the White Mountains in West Crete, is 16 km long, starts at an altitude of 1250m and goes all the way down to the shores of the Libyan sea in Agia Roumeli. The walk through the gorge was around 13 km. The terrain was stony most of the time but it varied. The path at the beginning was paved with uneven stones, then was more like a forest path. After river bed, the walk was mostly on pebbles. We crossed the river many times, sometimes on small wooden bridges but more frequently by traipsing across placed rocks. The southern end of the National Park was flat, but had no shade, and was HOT! We were often amazed by watching the diehard traversing the gorge in the opposite (upward) direction.
